Demographic profile
Two erstwhile Districts of the state of Assam: the United Khasi and Jaintia Hills, and the Garo Hills were carved out on 21 January 1972 to form the State of Meghalaya. It covers a total area of 22.429 sq. km and has a population of 23,18,822 as per 2001 census.  Over the years, 5 more districts have been created totaling seven at present. The Area and Population of the districts are shown below.
